Many new sellers price products by adding a fixed markup to their cost, then discover they are losing money after fees, shipping and returns. This guide shows how to calculate profit margin for online sellers properly, with a worked example. It is part of our how to find trending products series.

Every cost to include

  1. Product cost (wholesale price + freight to your warehouse)
  2. Packaging
  3. Marketplace commission or referral fee
  4. Fixed or closing fee per order
  5. Shipping fee
  6. GST on fees
  7. Advertising cost per order
  8. Return and RTO allowance
  9. GST on the sale (if registered)

The formula

Net profit = Selling price - GST on sale - Product cost - Packaging - Marketplace fees - Shipping - Ads - Return allowance

Profit margin = net profit ÷ selling price × 100.

Worked example (illustrative numbers)

A steel water bottle sold at ₹499 (GST-inclusive, 18%):

LineAmount (₹)
Selling price499
GST on sale (18% inclusive)−76
Product cost incl. freight−150
Packaging−15
Marketplace fees incl. GST (example)−75
Shipping (example)−60
Ads per order−40
Return allowance (5%)−25
Net profit58

Margin = 58 ÷ 499 = about 11.6%. That is thin. Raising the price, cutting product cost through better wholesale pricing, or selling a 2-pack would improve it. The fee and shipping figures here are examples only; use each portal's current fee calculator.

Portal differences

Meesho charges zero commission but buyers expect low prices; Amazon and Flipkart charge referral fees but support higher prices. Run the numbers for each portal separately.

Five ways to improve margin

  • Buy at a lower slab price by ordering slightly more.
  • Sell combos; see combo products to sell on Meesho.
  • Add branding to justify a higher price; see private label products.
  • Choose light products to cut shipping.
  • Reduce returns with accurate photos and size charts.
